ST ANDREWS

The Auld Grey Toon.

The Dark Ages heralds the first recorded mention of a town on the site of St Andrews, then called Kilrymont. The earliest inhabitants of the area were farmers and fishermen, but their simple lifestyle was to be entirely transformed in the medieval era due to the arrival of monks, pilgrims, academics, merchants and armies. St Andrews has a very rich and diverse history and one that you will enjoy learning about.

Founded in the fifteenth century, St Andrews is Scotland's first university and the third oldest in the English speaking world. Teaching began in the community of St Andrews in 1410 and the University was formally constituted by the issue of a papal bull in 1413 Over the last 600 years, the University of St Andrews has established a reputation as one of the world’s leading research and teaching centres

St Andrews has no fewer than six museums, all readily accessible by the general public. Museums include the Preservation Trust,  University Museum and the newly refurbished British Golf Museum. In addition, many local festivals take place in the summer months along the coast of the East Neuk in fishing villages such as Crail
